All You Need To Know About Sleep and the Workplace

There is a time for many words, and there is also a time for sleep”.

Homer, The Odyssey

No luxury of your own bed in those days.

My mother used to say; “ Now off to bed, you need your sleep”. So, when I had children of my own, I had a similar mantra, “ Off to bed girls, you need your beauty sleep”.

There was also a desire to have some peace and quiet and watch my favourite television programme. Oh dear what a selfish revelation, but we do need our quality time too.

We know all about sleep

Now if parents tell their children all the benefits of going to sleep, it must be because they know all you need to know about sleep themselves!

So, why do we see headlines like:

UK Tiredness Plague” .. 33% of the UK population regularly gets less than six hours of sleep a night, according to the British Sleep Council.

Millions of Americans are sleep deprived- and it’s literally killing us”. ….traffic accidents and road deaths caused by tiredness; 17% of fatal crashes involved driver sleep.

It seems we may see sleep as a necessary interruption to your daily life; you may even claim to be able to manage with 4 or 5 hours of sleep. However, increasing research around the world, shows how important sleep is to our health, our work and well being, which is why it has been described as:

The most underrated health habit.  Dr. Michael Roizen, Chief Wellness Officer of the Cleveland Clinic,

The research has shown that failing to get a good sleep results in a wide range of problems including:

  • Difficulties in keeping concentration
  • Slower reactions
  • Lower capabilities and efficiency of task performance
  • Increased number of errors
  • Poor memorizing
  • Wrong decisions
  • The risk of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease increases.

So What Can You Do?

You could take a look at sleep research organisations such as:

However these sites tend to address the interests of academics and scientists on the subject, and therefore may not be any easy read.

Your Next Step

Consequently, I have spent many hours pulling together all the research on sleep for you and produced a paper I have called “All You Need To Know About Sleep.”

Sleep, Time Management, TImelyness

It is written for the layperson, but provides the sources of information for those of you who like to go a bit further on the subject. The paper pulls together the overall advice of experts. So the chapters cover:

  • An understanding of the sleep process
  • The impact of a lack of sleep on your body, mind and work
  • What affects sleep quality
  • What you can do to get a better sleep
  • The ideal Sleep Routine

Furthermore, its free!

You will find it, with other information, on my Art of Sleep Page.  Do get your copy now, and make sure you get a good sleep tonight..
