4 Habits ALL Successful People Have.

Being Successful is something we all hope to be. So, what habits will help you achieve success?

Success, Successful, Timelyness

Firstly, the most noteworthy approach is to look at others research on habits of successful people, and then compare the results. I did this and found 4 habits that they all have. Hence this post will tell you what are they and take a look at how I did it.

The Methodology

I took the subject of “successful people do this,” and compared 6 posts from different sources including Huffington post, Inc.com, and LifeHack. Then I compared the habits they listed. Whilst research was the basis of some posts, other posts it is not clear if it is fact and feelings are the major contributor.

These posts all relate to people they consider to be successful. Some have used successful business people like Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey and Henry Ford. Others have used Presidents and Artists and Scientists. Consequently, does this mean if you fail to achieve fame and fortune, you are not successful?

Let us first take a look at what is success, and then evaluate what habits support achieving it.

What is Success?

Firstly I read the dictionary definition, but this didn’t help me much. Furthermore, the values of success commonly portrayed in the media and used by parents and peers are:

-Financial stability
-Peer recognition
-Achieving goals

Then, in my research I came across a video of  Jamie Anderson.  Jamie’s family were poor, but he was good at school and won a scholarship to go to university. As a result of this he developed a highly successful career as an academic, writer and speaker working for a top Business School, publishing articles in top magazines, travelling the world and making “more money than he thought possible”.

When he reached 39 years of age he suddenly realised he was not happy. He was always working, not seeing his wife and 3 children as much as he wanted and consequently he was tired, unhealthy and unhappy and questioned if this is success.

Next, I looked at research on “What is Success?” carried out by some young college graduates seeking the answer. I also looked at what the Dalai Lama’s  thoughts were on the subject. They came to similar conclusions that success is:

Pursue your passions for purpose, value and fulfilment. (Graduates)

Happiness is a sense of satisfaction within yourself. If you help others and bring happiness to others, you get benefit. More inner strength, more confidence of purpose of life and fulfilment about that purpose, then you always feel happy. (Dalai Lama).

Habits for Success

Finally, I analysed the six posts and found there were 23 different habits suggested in the posts. Of these, 10 habits were uniques to one list or another and these included: “Be willing to work hard,” and “take care of your finances.”

As a result, the most common habit:

  • They never stop learning from life, from failures, from criticism, from reading. (Top with 5 of the 6 posts agreeing: 83%).

Then came three with 4 of the 6 posts agreeing (67%).

  • They maintain balance in life, have time for relationships and love, take care of themselves and their health.
  • Have good social skills and surround themselves with like minded people.
  • Focus on the big picture and have passion and perseverance for long term goals.

Lastly there were two topics each mentioned 3 of the 6 posts (50%).

  • They focus on making small changes to improve their habits, skills and life.
  • Maintain a positive attitude, refuse to take no for an answer.

Conclusion

Ironically, there was little or no support for the values the media, our parents or peers tend to put on success, namely-Financial stability, Peer recognition, Achieving goals.

First of all, you should  not measure success by what others believe in, measure it by what you value and feel passionate about.

Therefore, the key habits (beyond 60% in agreement) that all successful people have is:

  1. They never stop learning from life, from failures, from criticism, from reading.
  2. They maintain balance in life, have time for relationships and love, take care of themselves and their health.
  3. Have good social skills and surround themselves with like minded people.
  4. Focus on the big picture and have passion and perseverance for long term goals.

Jamie Anderson finished off his video presentation saying:

“Its alright aiming for the moon, but there are a lot of stars in the universe so make sure the one you aim for is your own”.
