Discover the Best Kept Secret of Time Management

Secret of Time Management, clock, minutes, time, people Time Management
The Secret of Time Management

Sh Shss ..everybody, it’s a secret. Excuse me, what can be a secret in Time Management?  Millions have probably done a course, so what can the secret be?

I am sure you have heard of Time Management. You may have even been on a course or read some of the many books and articles around the subject. You can find something on all aspects, there is Time Management:

  • for Managers

  • for Teachers

  • for Students

  • for Nurses

  • for Writers

Strange really, surely time is the same for everyone. Is it a marketing gimmick or do they all need a different approach?

I read an article on Time Management for writers. The author wrote,

Rule 1. When your writing, write

and the author went onto to say However much or little time you have, you need to make the most of it”

Now, I would have thought this is quite obvious. If you are a teacher, then you want to teach. I know managers love managing and nurses like to nurse. Furthermore I am sure you do your best to make the most of your time. Don’t you!

Whilst rules can be a good idea, in reality you are more inclined to break them, bend them or ignore them. By nature we tend to do what we want to do, not what we should do. Either way, you probably feel you are doing your best to make the most of it.

Anyway, you know all this so, what is the best kept secret of time management?

The Best Kept Secret of Time Management

The Best kept secret is it does not work.

When I say it does not work, I mean, it does not work for most people. It may work for a few, but then it is quite likely they did not need it in the first place.

If it did work:

  • Why are Time Management authors writing about its failures.

Forster (2006), in his third book on time management, wrote, “Nevertheless, inevitably the ideas in them [his books] have done little to affect society at large. The problems and pressures of modern life are still there and if anything the pressures we put ourselves under at work have got worse”.

  • Why are people late for meetings, rushing around to complete work at the last minute, complaining they don’t have enough time. Clearly, if time management worked, then these things would not happen.

So what is the alternative?

The Alternative.

I think Time Management is rather like dieting. How many people do you know who have been on a diet either fail? They fail to lose weight because they give up, or lost weight, only to put it back on again.

People lose weight and sustain the loss because they change their eating lifestyle. They change their approach to food and their eating habits.

My 21st Century alternative to Time Management is Timelyness and it does the similar thing. It helps you change your time lifestyle. It aims to change your approach to time and your time habits. You can find out more in my book “The Myth of Time Management” and on my website.

  2. I think what you posted made a bunch of sense. However, think about this, what if you added a little information? I ain’t suggesting your content isn’t good., but suppose you added something that grabbed people’s attention? I mean %BLOG_TITLE% is kinda boring. You should look at Yahoo’s home page and see how they write article headlines to grab people interested. You might add a related video or a picture or two to grab people excited about what you’ve written. In my opinion, it would bring your blog a little livelier.
